hi there! i'm coming from austin, tx (don't worry - absolutely NOT a bush supporter ), and i'm new to the festival scene over in britain. i can't wait!! i wanted to introduce myself and also, i have some (possibly annoying) questions: what's the camping like? what kinds of concession stands/merchants are there usually? will i need a crapload of cash? how hot/cool does it get? in other words, what should i expect? i'm pretty expert at wilderness camping, but i understand that this will be very different from that, of course. i've read a bunch of your topics, including the one about tent security, all of which is really helpful. any info would be much appreciated. thanks in advance!
- allison
ps. you think your travel plans are last-minute! any ideer how much the train from heathrow airport might be??? as i will have to purchase my train tix on that friday, i'm a little freaked about their maybe being sold out :-/ (or does it even work that way?)

Hi & welcome to FW! You should go say hello in the 'general dribble' section theres a thread for new memebers there!
We really are quite nice here.
Wow you are travelling far!
Weather - totally unpredictacble, at the moment we are having (for us!) a bit of a heat wave an dits even pretty warm thru the night. Hopefully it will be like that a t Glade but it may be quite chilly in the evenings and it may well rain (but we hope not). You cant even believ the weather forecast here, its an island it changes pretty quick!!
Youve picked the right festy to experience thats for sure, lovely vibe, lovely bunch of folks the last two years.
Cash wise the foods lovely, caters for most tastes, about £3 - 6 for a nice plate of food, £1 - 2 for a coffee, £ 3 for a smoothie. Stallls are pretty nice theres nice stuff to buy but theres not loads on them, you can spend as much as you like really!! Theres a good stall called Joe Bannanas they sell lots of camping type stuff.
Train - dont worry they wont sell out but it may get a bit expensive, probably not more than £35 return to London I wouldnt think, but hey, Im burbling, I may talk rubbish.... I'll let the others have you now....
Maybe we'll see you at glade - look out for the festival weather camp!

thanks so much! that is exactly the kinda info i was hoping for. i will definitely check out the general dribble section too. as for heatwave... i'll gladly take an british one over a texas one any day! right now it's 94F (around 35C?) and climbing. no matter what though, nothing would stop me from being there this year!! we don't have anything like the glade in tx, although sxsw & acl can be fun, but no huge collection of electronic stuff/artists. every once in a while, an artist like squarepusher will stop in during a tour (if we're lucky). i'm so excited!!

I wouldn't be so sure, Allison - round here it's only a few degrees below 45 atm, but it's WAY more humid - the MET office has issued a level-3 heat-health alert (from memory, level 4 constitutes national emergency).
Chances are it'll be -20 in ten days, so don't worry too much

Hi ya,
Joyous has said things better than I... but asfar as secruity goes.. I would not let stop you from coming. I saw /had no experince of it last year. There were some isolated cases, but with 10,000+ people you are going to get some scum bags. there is some good advice on other threads.
Quote "right now it's 94F (around 35C?)" wow England stops at about 32C <g>
I would suggest you try and tie up with the FW camp, my guess is that there will be several camps, but if you ignore the pissed up old farts, they are a good bunch. Im sure if you forget something , someone will have something you can borrow...
....Glade is fantastic, keep an open mind...be sensible (dont take risks) and just enjoy....you will have agreat time..

Hi! The food stalls are amazing, so much to choose from but if your coming from all the way over there, you have to ty the Pie stall. its the only reason i'm going back.
Sure, the people are lovely and pretty and smiley. Sure, the tunes are fucking amazing. Sure the weather will be lush, but the Pies. Oh the pies.
saying that, my other half is bringing cold pizza and pasta bake so if you dont want to spend loads, i'm sure we can sneak you some

Hi Allison!
Welcome to FW and Glade!! hee hee!!!
Yes the choice of food is pretty good and although i'm not a vegetarian i think i enjoyed the veggie food stalls the most! there is plenty to choose from and i didnt think it was too expensive either.
You wil be able to withdraw cash there so dont worry to much about having/not having enough!
As joyous said the train wont sell out, but it wont be cheap and im not sure what route you'll need to take from Heathrow, but when you buy your ticket the clerk will be able to advise you.
(fingers crossed) the weather will be fine and if the heatwave we are currently experiencing has left us, you can expect it to get a little cold at night. Last year it was very, very hot during the day (not Austin hot though!) but it still got a little cold at night.
The monthly weather report predicts an unsettled period during the middle of July (wind/rain etc...) but it's not that accurate, and the report covers the 10th-23rd July, so we may well (please, please, please!!!!!!!) avoid wet weather.
Camping is easy, if last two years are anything to go by, the camping will be a huge arc that pretty much covers all the ground across the festival site.
You're gonna have a great time!!!!

oh man, i'm in trouble. i have a weakness for pie/pastries that is legendary.
thanks for the cold pizza offer (best leftovers in the world) too. i am bringing some freeze-dried stuff in case i break & bleed the bank
hello & thank you also to asmooth2! i'm not a vegetarian either, but i love a tasty veggie dish. sooooo glad to hear/read that the heatwave has passed - whew! hopefully we'll get to enjoy cool, rain-free camping i will bring something warm, in case it's chilly. sort of used to it being, or at least feeling 80F at nite - bleh! i'm so excited, i can't stand it!! thanks again for the info.

Hi Allison, you will have a wicked time, with camping dont bring anything you cant afford to loose or keep it on you. But then I've had no problems for the last 2 years.
If you find out where the ID Spiral tent is most of us will be somewhere behind it look for butterfly flags.
Weather has been really hot for the last 2 years as well but being England you never know bring on the snow
You are going to meet a right bunch of insane nutters who are probably the nicest most genuine people you will ever meet. Oh and most of them are tree hugging but hey no ones perfect

I remind yo that it could not be proved in court as that was "a lack of evidence" <g>

You're perfectly aware that was a case of mistaken identity, senile. I thought that tree was my boyfriend. The fact that my boyfriend was several thousand miles southwest at the time is neither here nor there, given the amount of ganja I'd smoked!
